Public Works Department.

67. New Workshops for Electrical and Mechanical sub-department. This scheme was referred to in last year's report. Owing to pressure of other work no further progress was made.

68. P.W.D. Laboratory and Port Works Store. building at the Port Works Depôt, North Point, provides accommodation for Port Works stores, a site office, and a P.W.D. Laboratory for testing all types of building material and soils. Work was started in August and completed in December.

District Commissioner, New Territories.

69. When additional Courts were required in the Kowloon Magistracy it became necessary to find alternative accommodation for the District Commissioner, New Territories, whose offices were in the Magistracy. New temporary offices were erected on the flat site adjoining the Magistracy. Work was commenced in October and completed in December.

Social Welfare Office.

A three-storey building was purchased by Government and converted for use as a Home for 150 boys, with dormitories, dining room, 3 classrooms, staff quarters, including a small flat for the Superintendent. Work was commenced in August and completed in December.

Post Office.

71. Alterations to Post Office Building. Major alterations continued. Progress was, however, slow due to the necessity of maintaining the service to the public. Improved lighting was installed in the sorting hall, a new gallery erected for Post Office Boxes, together with a new public counter for bulk parcels on the Connaught Road/Pedder Street corner. Extensions to the public hall on the Des Voeux Road side were almost complete by the end of the year.
