times coming, as this in itself would tend towards a re-creation of confidence; while a still more practical comment is that made at the combined meeting of the Ham- burg Amerika Line and the North German Lloyd, when it was re- marked that four vossela would be ordered "as a counter-measure, against economic pessimism." When an important combination of this magnitude embarks upon such policy, other owners must clearly consider their position. There are other hopeful signs In some directions freights have stiffened during, the past month, and both Sir Arthur M. Sutherland, chair- man of the North German Lloyd, expressed the opinion that there were gleams of sunshine and that the lowest point in the crials had been reached.

A year ago there were ships of 3,265,000 tons gross under con struction, and to-day the figure is just under 2,000,000 tons, of which the United Kingdom is responsible for only one-third, against 50 per cont. In March, 1930. It is in- evitable and this point cannot possibly be disputed that over a number of years the average ton- nage of cargo and the number of passengers carried must tend to in-{ crease, and, at any rate, they can- not decrease. To accommodate them, an average number of ships must be built annually, and if they are not eqnstructed during one period the work is merely held up. The cycles of world depression which are a feature of history lead to periods of lesser demand for transport, and shipowners naturally withhold placing their tonnage. But replaced it must be, and, for instance, in Great Britain etatistics indicate that we should, on an average, always have 1,200,000 tons gross under con- struction.¡ ̈ At the present moment the figure is rather less than half. Hence, when orders begin to, be placed there have been contracts |for only 100,000" toni gross (ex- cluding the Cunarder). Instead of 600,000 tons in the past six months we have not only to build the average figure Butto make up for those which have not been ordered during depression: t Prosperity inevitable

This fact, cannot be tóa strongly impressed upon the in- dustry at large. Ships are neces sities; and if they remain unorder- ed they must be built when more prosperous times come,
The relatively few orders of the' past six months have mainly been for fast express passenger liners of enormous size which could be
laid down only by subsidies, direct or indercet,, as in the case of France, Italy, and, the United States. In fact if we deduct these mammoth liners (which do not re- present commercial shipping in the ordinary sense), there has, bee tannage of only 428,000 ordered throughout the wor the past six months, whereas
normal figure should be thres
times as large.

NEW CHARM, NEW BEAUTY
CONCRETE WORK
IN
It is now possible, at no great additional cost, to introduce the charm of colour into ordinary-concrete work. A new coloured cement is available "Colorerate" which possesses the advantage of 1 permanent and standardised colour. The two colours" available at the moment are buff and red. Concrete made with "Colorcrete" is not only much more beautiful than ordinary concrete but it has the. strength and hardens just as rapidly as concrete made with "Ferrocrete," the rapid-hardening Portland cement. It gives in 4 days the strength of concrete made with ordinary Portland cement in 28 days.
"Colorcrete" is of considerable value for all concrete constructional work where permanent colour would be an advantage. It gives a concrete which harmonises perfectly with the natural surroundings, and which reduces glare due to the reflected rays of the sun.
Have the advantage of colour in constructional work by constructing in concrete made with "Colorcrete." - Pavilions, bandstands, shelters and promenades: factories, bridges, muni cipal houses, carriageways and paths, can all be beautified at very little extra cost, by the use of this rapid-hardening coloured Portland cement
crete."
