CYCLONE ON MALABAR COAST.
Lighter Crew Flang Into Water.
Calcutta, May 9.
A cyclone passed along the coast on Thursday night. A lighter engaged in landing cement from the Clan Kenneth sank with 95 barrels alongside the steamer. Another Hghter, which was empty, enpsized near the steamer, the crew of 20. being flung into the water. The steamer's lifeboats were im- mediately lowered and all, the men with the exception of one were re- scued.
The capsized lighter drifted but yesterday its position was located six miles away near Beypore. Ar- rangements are being made to salve both the lighters, which belong to Messrs. Peirce, Leslie.
Reports from Ernad and Wallu. vanad state that may trees were up- rooted and branches torn off during the cyclone. Motor traffic was ob structed on the roads in many places and tiles were blown off bulldinge. A horse was killed in Kallayi Road, as the result of an electric wire breaking and falling on it.
FRENCH TONNAGE.
A general survey of French mercantile shipping is contained in the annual report (1930) of the Association of French Ship
The report shows that
owners.
a considerable addition was "made to French tonnage during the year, and that although felt, the general effect upon French shipping has been much less severe than upon that of other countries."
The total tonnage of the Mer-
amounted cantile Marino
to 3,497,353, gross increase of 217.137 tons, but reduced by with. drawals to a net figure of 102,652 The reduction in tonnage tons. of goods carried was only 700,000, or 1.34 per cent. of the world re- duction. The report concludes with the opinion that the two greatest barriers to à trade re- vival are tariffs and Russian dùmp- ing.
