LAWN BOWLS OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP.

Wotherspoon's Run of Bad Luck Persists.

A NARROW DEFEAT.

ty "Shart Head."] For many years W. Wotherspoon, the veteran lawn bowls player of the Taikoo Dock, has cherished an ambition to win the Open Singles Championship, but has had a run of sheer bad luck that no one will envy. He has appeared in many semifinals and in the final once, but has always been beaten on the This year he was drawn post. against W. Ward, of the Craigen-: gower C.C., and the match was to have been played last night on the Police R.C. green. Somehow or other the arrangements went agley and, having come to the Valley, Wotherspoon sportingly offered to play Ward on his own green al Which the Craigengower Club. was an error of tactics.

Ward gave him an extraordinary good game after the manner of Peter Farrell and the last few heads were played amid intense - citement, first one and then the other gaining the lead. The inter- est was keen indeed when, the scores read 20-20 and Ward lay shot, with Wotherspoon still to, play his last wood. He made the only drive of the game and .miss- ed his objective, the game' going to Ward by 21-20..

On an adjoining rink Rumjahn, of the Craigengower Club, played Dobbie, of the Civil Service, and could nothing wrong whilst his op ponent could do nothing right, the score at the frish being 21-1 in favour of Rumjahn, who now meets the winner of the Brawn-Farrell' tle.

The survivors of the preliminary round so far are:-

Hampton, K.E.G.C. McLeod, Talkoo. Rumjahn, C.C.C... Ward, C.C.C.

YOUNG BOWLER'S RARE DISTINCTION.

School Cricket Provides Triple "Hat Trick," WITHOUT COMPARISON.

From Johannesburg comes news of an astonishing fent in a cricket match

schoolboy hetween two teams representing Aliwal North- and Smithfield, respectively. Smithfield were all out for 22. Paul Hugo, a left-hand bowler, worked auch havoc that Aliwal North were all out" for 3 runs, of which one was a bye. Hugo took nine wickets in succession, three- with the last three balls of his first over, and in his next over he captured a wicket with every ball, thus performing the triple hat- trick.
