ANCHOR LINE REPORT.

THE CHINA

Earnings Reduced by Trade Depression.

The report of the directors of the Anchor Line, (Henderson Brothers), Ltd.. states that the company has experienced a most difficult year, but the services of the company have been regular- By maintained. The cffects of the general trade depression are reflected in the earnings for the year, which are considerably be- low those of the previous year.

The Glasgow-New York pas- senger business during the great- er part of the year was maintain- ed on

From an average level, October onward, however, the restrictive measures applied to immigration brought about an immediate curtailment of traffic, which was reflected in a drop in revenue. The volume of cargo in the Glasgow-New York service has been greatly reduced, and the eastbound revenue suffered severely from legislation restrict- ing the import of apples into the United Kingdom.

In the Bombay service passen- ger earnings were satisfactory.]' The exceptional political condi- tions in India seriously deduced the volume of exports and the homeward cargo position has been extremely had and rates have been on a very low level.

The directors regret to report that a special examination made at their request revealed serious defalcations by the late secre- tary of the company. Appro- action has been taken priate within the organisation to obviate as far as possible the possibility of a recurrence of such irregularities.

-

The profits for the year, which closed on December 31, 1930, after crediting certain reserves not longer required, amounted to €201,746 (£253,353 in 1929), less: directors' fees, £1,260 (same), leaving £200,486 (£252,093). To this there falls to be added balance brought forward from December 31, 1929, £77,977 (£96,699) making £278,463 (£348,762), out of which there has been written off for deprecia- tion, £246,907 (£256,485), leav- ing £33,556 (£92,277). There has been paid dividend on prefer- ence shares for half-year ending April 30, 1930, and for half-year ending October 31, 1930 (less in- come-tax), absorbing £13,853
