MAN'S MANIA FOR "TYING-UP."
"
Victim Who Began at the Age of Eleven.
30 YEARS' ORDEAL.
The strange case of a man who for thirty years-since the age of eleven-has suffered from a mania for tying himself up, is described In the current issue of the British William Medical Journal by Dr. Brown.
Dr. Brown, who is Wilde Reader' in Mental Philosophy at Oxford advises masters at University boarding schools firmly to check any boy under their charge who is. known to be fond of playing this "tying-up" game.
The man Dr. Brown mentions, who has recently been under bis treatment, would sometimes per- suade some one else to tie him up. but he would always maka his help. er believe that it was a harmless game.
Frank Confession.
The victim of this strange abnor- mality made a frank confession in • writing to his doctor, in which he wrote: "Though 1 alwaye took care to leave some kind of loop- hole to escape by I made it as dif- ficult as I dared."
He mentioned that one of his
practices was to place a knife in such a place that it was difficult for him to reach. He was only dis- covered in the act once, and that was when he was about fourteen years old at a public school.
One of his narrowest escapes was at
camp
war; during the when he handcuffed himself with a chain, and was hardly able to es- · cape.
Dr. Brown states that if the pa- tient had received proper treat- ment in his youth he would have been saved years of the most severe mental torture. The compulsive nature of the tendency to this par- ticular form of mania made it dan-. gerous, as well as painful, to the aufferer, ho adds, and schoolmas- ters should be acquainted with the "tylng-up” game in order to know
