TANKER FLEETS.

NEW VESSELS UNDER

CONSTRUCTION.

Leading world oil companies are taking advantage of the pre- sent depression in the shipbuild- ing industry thoroughly to

modernise their tanker fleets (says the Financial Times). The present building programme of the

oil industry is without parallel in the history of the oll business, in the opinion of the Oil and Gas Journal, and has attracted considerable attention owing to the fact that the petro- leum industry, with the largest aggregate tanker tonnage in its history, has a considerable pro- portion of this tonnage tied up idle for lack of cargo.

On January 1 this year it is estimated that there was a total of 1,437 tankers of 500 tons gross or over, aggregating 11,825,013 deadweight tons, afloat This in all parts of the world. flect has an approximate carry- ing capacity of 88,688,000 barrels | of clean oil, or 76,863,000 barrels of dirty oil. More than 1,000,000 additional tons of tankers were under construction at the close of last year. Of these there were approximately 60 American tank- ers, aggregating 582,000 dead- weight tons, laid up out of the service, and reports from other countries indicate that - ap- proximately 100 foreign tankers were also temporarily inactive reflecting depressed conditions in the world oil industry.
