PRIZES DISTRIBUTED.
Colonel C. R. U. Saville, D.S.O.. O.B.E., in the course of a typical- ly soldierly speech at the annual smoking concert and prize distri bution of the Volunteer Defence Corps, last night, set all critics of the Corps.at rest.
The Volunteer Corps, he said, had nothing to do with wars in Europe, or anywhere else, except as regards Hong Kong. It had nothing to do with a corps of officers, but was purely and simply a corps of defence for the members own homes and pro- perty in Hong Kong.
Colonel Savile commented on the all-round level of efficiency in the Corps, and, on behalf of the Command, expressed willingness to assist in any way possible, dur- ing the individual training season now about to begin.
Lt. Col. L. G. Bird presided over an enthusiastic gathering, who wielded knives and forks in the true Service manner. Rounds of genuine applause greeted the prize winners as they came up, Sgt. F. P. Sequeira (No. 10 Platoon), who won the Corps Championship, being specially ovated. Signalman R. E. Stott and Corpl. A. W. Salter, second and third respectively, were also highly congratulated, both for- mally and informally.
A Popular Winner. Tremendous applause was forthcoming when Lieut. H. Westlake, D.C.M., who is not a recruit, came forward to accept the Officers Cup; and the rest of the Corps dissembled admirably when the Battery took the Nathan Cup for efficiency.
The evening was notable for a selection of salutes, all per- fectly correct, of old and
new
TC-
vintage, which irresistibly minded one of that famous ex- pression "old soldiers never die." Nor did they fade away alto- gether, later, when an excellent musical programme, eked out by one or two impromptu "turns" was gone through.
