LUCKY FINDS OF MONSTERS.

Mystery of the Young Kangaroo.

VALUABLE DISCOVERIES.

a

Valuable discoveries often have strange origins. One of the finest dinosaur tracks yet known was found last year in slab of ordinary paving-stone do- ing duty in a busy thoroughfare. Recently an Indiana school- boy, who was walking in the cour try, stumbled over a mastodon. A portion of the jaw chanced to be projecting from the mud, and investigation of the cause of his hindrance brought to light a tooth weighing 8 lb.

It was identified as that of a mastodon.

This lucky find led eventually to inquiry by Dr. C. J. Fish, of whom the plot of land was leased, the Buffalo Science Museum, to

and the excavations of the mons. ter were undertaken forthwith. Working with hand trowels in or- der not to damage the specimen, there was gradually brought to light the major portion of an elephant dead for over 10,000 years. It proved to be one of the largest ever found.

One tusk was 12ft. Gin. long: the ribs measured over 4ft. each; and the thigh-bone was nearly a yard in length. During the gla cial period these and other large animals frequently died en masse, and in the hope that this piece of land may prove a mastodon cemetery, further excavations on grand scale will begin this Spring.
