But Cromwell's army was hard on their heels, and the fol- lowing morning the Royalists were driven back to the manor
THE LEGEND OF THE
SNOWDROP.
Long ago, the legend tells us. the King of Albion's son visited Fairyland, wher he met the king's daughter, the lovely fairy Kenna, and fell in love with her. Then Oberon, king of the fairies, was so angry' that he drove the prince out of Fairyland.

Suddenly a mailed fist struck Mark and he went down. When he regained his senses, he found himself in a large stone hall with a number of ruffians and labourers who had been kidnap- ped to serve the Lord Protector. One by one, they were clothed,
and armed,
with presented eight-pence, their pay per day.
When Mark stood before the Commissioner, he protested. "I have more than five pounds worth of goods in my own right; there- fore I am exempt from serving as a soldier," he declared. "Also I am an Oxford student, and not yet fifteen,"
The Commissioner smiled as he looked at Mark's broad shoulders. Then he offered to make the boy one of his own mounted troopers, among whom, he said, he would find many young students. Thinking how both friend and foe had plunder ed his father's house and the village, Mark, ke hundreds of ather young Puritans, entered! Cromwell's army in an endeavour to stay. the hand of strife.
He fought with his books on his back and his Bible in his pocket, and not even his enemies could bring any charge against him when Royalty came into its own again.

When pennies are scarce, have to think out ways and of freshening up our wardrobes as economically as possible! And one of the nicest Ways of making an "elderly" dress look more presentable is to fashion a pretty little" waistcoat to wear over it. This takes very little material, and if you some dark coloured cloth, and embroider the waistcoat In various bright shades, you cun wear it over several differ- ent dresses.

The Waistcoat sketched takes about three-quarters of a yard of material. It is made in three piecesa bnek and two fronts.
Dressmaker tells you how
to mako and embroider this smart tile waistcont which will cheer up an old dress.
You'll find it best to cut out the shapes in newspaper first; then you can experiment and be sure of getting a good fit. Diagram A shows the shape of the back, and Diagram B gives you 2 front. Sew the back to the fronts along the sides, and join the wee shoulder-seams, then press the whole under a damp cloth with a hot iron.
Bind the arm-holes, and round the edges of the waistcoat with bright coloured wool-tape-you can buy this in many cheerful shades for three-halfpence the yard. When the binding is finished, you're ready to do the embroidery, which consists of gay daisy-like flowers worked all round the bottom of the waist- coat. Draw the shapes on with white chalk-Diagram C gives you the outlines make some with rather short stems and others with longer stems Then work them so that they look like Dia- gram D. The flower-petals" are worked in las daisy stitches, and Diagram E shows you these in case you've forgotten how to do them. The centres are filled in with yellow satin-stitches, the stalks are worked in green back- stitch, and lazy-daisies each side suggest the leaves.
Red, blue and orange flowers make a pretty colour-scheme on a black waistcoat; brown and orange on nigger; and white daisies with orange centres look most attractive
on a deep blue
