WRECK FOR 30s.!

DRAMA OF "SINKING" LINER.

THE CHINA MAIL.

Cries of "Help! help!" and the shrieks of hundreds of "panie stricken" men and women roused hundreds of people from their beda, in the neighbourhood of the Surrey Docks, in the carly morning of March 20.

They dashed to the windows and hundreds of others lined the dluck bridge outside, while sea- men in the boats in the dock rushed up from clow.

An astonishing sight startled their half-opened eves for down) the side of a "sinking" liner four) Fifebonts laden with men and women were making for the water. On the deck of the giant vessel gold-braided officers were shouting at the tops of their voices.

Three of the bonts safely reached the water a hundred feet

below, but the fourth capsized. and its forty passengers and crew were

shot into the dark. cold, murky water of the "ocean." Panic reigned all around; men were struggling and winning in the water, two were "knocked out," and one man had his face streaming with "blood."

Rescue boats raced to the i scene, and all the passengers were safely picked up and taken to the quay-side, where an ambu- larice and doctor waited to attend the injured.

Scenes of Revelry.

Giant cameras on the liner and on barges in the river clicked away throughout the "seeno," for, although it was all most realistic, it was just part of the taking of a new film, the story of which is an adaptation of a play by lun Hay.

The 15,000-ton liner Alaunia had been taken over by a film company for the "shooting" of the piece. There were more than 300 "stars" and artists on board, and they were assisted by the ship's officers and crew.

Scenes of revelry and dancing were in progress on board when the ship was involved in a colli-
