Mr. Alfred H. Watson presided. Dr. Maitreyi Bose, of the Chit- taranjan Seba Sadan, remarked that there was a wide opening for women doctors, partly for private work among women, especially in purdah homes, partly for medical inspection in girls' schools, and partly for hospital work.

A great opportunity for wonten doctors to do good work was in girls' schools, where girls on the threshold of womanhood should possess a sound and healthy know- ledge of their own physiology. Given the same opportunities, the woman doctor could be as good a surgeon, physician and bacteriolo- gist as the man.

Miss Alton observed that there was much scope for women in the legal profession in India. Oppost- tion at the Bar Itself was no more, and perhaps less, than that which existed between man and man.

There were very few women bar-Sung ristors in India. and, until more! women entered this field. they could not gain as much confidence from their clients as men had done.

Only Two Subjects.

In emphasising the need for women in the teaching profession, Miss Secar, principal of the Brahmo Girls' School, said that most Indian women.teachers taught history and literature, but almost invariably it was necessary to turn to forefen women for geography teachers,) and, as a rule, they had to call upon teachers of music and

men science.

The economic condition of India. Jehe declared, was compelling Indian women to seek work, and it was regrettable that training col- leges were so small and few.

There were many girls in the villages and homes who were seck-I ing work, and the teaching profes- sion was waiting for such people.

Mr. Alfred H. Watson said that the legal gates in India were now fully open to woman; she had only But, to press her way through. in the legal and medical profes- sions, she would do well not to press her way too rapidly, as open- inga for women barristers, sosi- citors, and doctors were limited.

As regards the teaching pro- fession, India had need for more women than in the legal or medical professions. Teachers' training cost less than qualifications. for members of either of the other pro fessions. This training was not expensive, and it was not necessary to be a university graduate to undertake teaching in elementary

schools.
