Behind the grand

I listened to the whirr of drills, the rattle of hammers,

and the cries of the

army of workmen hurrying to and fro. Already. the £100,000 structure of the main "Tate" building, half finished in detail, towers to the level of the highest part of the grand stand.

It was hard to believe that this mammoth structure is to be a bet- ting place, and not a luxury hotel. Its size alone awes one. Hundrede of tons of bricks have been placed in position and miniature railways ure being used to bring up fresh supplies.

I counted more than 100 finished pay windows on the ground level, and experts were laying the miles of enbles which will work the great indicators of the "Tote." Hundreds

of workmen were busy preparing

LORD ALLENBY'S APPEAL FOR

CADETS.

Field-Marshal Viscount Allenby, the President of the British Na- tional Cadet Association, discussed with me, writes the Morning Post Military correspondent, the efforts made to keep alive the National Cadet organisation and the success which has so far attended them.

"The withdrawal by the Govern

of official recognition," he mont said, "seriously threatened the existence of Cadets everywhere.

"The excuse offered by the Gov. ernment for refusing any longer to recognise the Cadet organisation is that it is militarist, but those who know the Cadets best disagree with the Government оп that point Militarism was at no time regard ed as ita function, and the re- cògnition given it by the War Office was never intended to make it militarist organisation.

"The primary object of the Cadet | movement is character-building." No one can say that that is not work of the highest national importance, since it tends to promote the meatal, moral, and physical culture of the youth of the country and to in- culcate patriotism and true citizenship in time of peace."

The Cadet and kindred organisa- tions, he added, were undoubtedly the best safeguards against the propaganda so skilfully and sedul- ously disseminated by Communist and Bolshevist agencies.
