Following the impact and listing of the stricken vessel those who chanced to be on deck either jumped or were thrown into the sea, with life-buoys. The life-buoys thrown from the Arc- turus, one account states, "proved excellent life-savers, the buoys being fitted with small carbide lamps, and the light which these I gave helped in saving people.'

One of the saved, Miss Tipping, having been pitched into the sea, goods which will be subject swam around and found an empty rent after April 13. boat, climbed into it, but it sank under her.

He would like to offer his congratulations to people like Sir James Lithgow and his National Bhipbuilders Security, which was trying to deal with the situa-. tion in a very practical way, and which he thought was leading the way in the reorganisation and the reconstruction of our in- dustries. If only the cotton and other trades could follow in their steps, he thought something real- ly great might be accomplished for the country.

The immediate need of the country, Sir Horbert said, was economy. His idea was not ne
