BRITISH COAL TRADE

DIFFICULTIES.

Baltic Maritime Parley Pointers.

SHIPOWNERS SUPPLIES.

In the

current issue of the Monthly Circular of the Baltic and Maritime Conference a num ber of subjects of importance to shipowners are discussed. It will be remembered that the chairman of the executive committee, Mr. T. C. Christensen, recently np-

pealed to members to use the Circular nu a means of expressing their views on shipping problems and of exchanging opinions. This appeal has borne fruit, as the Circular shows, not only in direct contribution of articles, but also in the submission of helpful suggestions and interesting cor- respondence.

It is significant and at the same time somewhat bewildering, points out the Circular, that a large proportion of what has been written refers to the British coal trade; significant, because it

shows how loath shipowners are to relinquish the outward coal cargo from U.K. ports which for so long has taken its part in round-trip calculations; and be wildering, because, as indicated to the Conference, it seems impos sible for anybody who has watch" ed developments during recent years to refrain from asking the question:Are the British really as anxious to sell their coal as other people nre to buy?
