1927, Minor-Canon N. T. Hopkins officiating. Little Paul had two knighta for godfathers (Sir Albert Spicer, director of the London Missionary Society, and Sir Arthur Yapp, National Secre- tary of the Y.M.C.A.), whilst Dame Ada .Pitts, of Plymouth, for many years à Missionary in Canton, and Mr. Ma's Sunday school teacher when he was a boy, was the godmother.

Water from the River Jordan was used to christen the baby. It was supplied by Mrs. Mary Hopkirk, of 114, Hampstead Way, N.W. 11, and contained in a bottle of Palestine glass, which is now one of the treasures which baby Paul's parents are conserv- ing for him.

A Social Event,

Guests at the christening and the reception which followed at Ye Mecca Cafe, 56, Ludgate Hill, E.C. 4, numbered nearly 200— Chinese, British, American, Japanese, Indian and Siamese. It was one of the social events of the year. The newspapers an- nounced it many days before and it so captured the imagination of the people of London, and many even farther afield, that Mr. and Mrs. Ma received many letters of congratulation and baby Paul numerous toys and other gifts from persons who were not per- sonally known to them, and there was a huge crowd in the vicinity of St. Paul's on the day of the christening,

One entorprising newspaper man put Mr. and Mrs. Ma on the horns of a dilemma just before the christening. He had made Inquiries in the Chinese colony as to native custom and without consulting. Mr. and Mrs. Ma he announced in his paper that guests would be presented with red-coloured hard-boiled eggå and crystallised ginger af mementoes of the occasion, in accordance with Chinese custom. A Happy Idea,

To recalling this, Mr. Ma told me with a smile that it caused him more trouble than the whole

that joke,

Another Gem. Here's another, also from ́a British paper:

"Little baby Ma, of Chinese parentage, should have little difficulty by and by in master- ing that usual first juvenile exercise in spelling, 'writing his own name, but let him je saved early from any misappre- hension about the uniqueness of its brevity. Ottawa was founded by a Colonel By; Mel- bourne still boasts a tradesman whose fascia inscription_reads "John Ny"; the United States has a family of some distinc- tion named Ek; and it is a few years since a successful busi. ness was established in Gray's Inn Road, London, by a Mr. S. Be, All these, however, have to yield the palm for brevity to a worthy dame who for many years presided over a wine shop in a Paris by-street. She could sign her name in one letter- 0."

It also gave the London Editor of a Leeds paper the opportunity to reveal his knowledge of things Chinese, thus:-

"The three-months-old Chin- ese baby is not departing en- tirely from the customs of his race, even though his parents are Christians,

"His grandfather, for in- stance, gave a dinner out in
