says the Journal of Commerce. It is of interest to note that this is the third destroyer to be built by Thornycrofts to bear this name, which emphasises the long connec- tion of the firm with Admiralty construction.

The Java-China-Japan Lifn who own about 20 cargo ships which are well known in these waters, have been paying increasing at tention to the conveyance of pas- songers in the last few years which has found its expression in the 3.8. Tjibadak and the m.3. Tjinegara A comparison with the older ships of the feet shows that none of these can take more than 12 first class passengers, but that the s.s. Tjibadak can accommodate

The second destroyer Daring was ordered in 1912, and was fast nearing completion at the outbreak of the War. Then, before the vessel was actually commissioned for service, she was re-named Lance, and subsequently had the distinction of firing the first naval shot in the War, sinking the mine- layer Königen Luise in the mouth of the Thames soon after dawn on August 5, 1914. This early success seems to prove that a change of same does not make an unlucky ship.
