Capable of Faster Speeds Than Cargo Steamers

Everyone knows that the big ocean-going square-riggers are al small and dwindling company. The reasons for their supersession by the tramp sicamer as the world's cargo carriers are not, however, generally fully appreciated by the shoregoing "man-in-the-street.” Most people think it is due to the superior speed of the steamer. But this is only so in a very limited

sense.

Actually on the open ocean runs the big, well-found and well-man- ned sailing ship is often capable of | a higher speed than the ordinary cargo-carrying steamer. Few of the latter can make more than 12 knots and the average is not more thar 9 or 10 knuts. The big clip-2 pers of the Australian emigrant and won! trades frequently exceeded 15 knots for days on end; and for short spella touched 20 or 21 knots-the

The best day's run ever recorded by a sailing ship was 436 nautical mes, made by the Blackballer Lightning in her first erossing of the Atlantic and when running Eastward, so that, owing to the change in longitude the real time. was less than 24 hours. No less than eight runs of over 400 miles jin 24 hours by different clippers are on record, two being credited to
