LATE PRINCESS ROYAL.
THE CHINA MAIL.
Rescue from Wrecked Liner.
HER LOVE MATCH.
London, Jan. 6. Loyal subjects throughout the Empire will sympathise with the King and the Royal Family in the bereavement that they have
suffered through the yesterday of the Princess Royal. And millions who knew her only by repute will mourn the loss of a kindly, sweet, and gentle lady who did much, in a quiet way, to maintain the high traditions of the Royal Family,,
The Duke, a member of an old Scottish family with an heredit ary talent for business, had a rent-roll of £80,000 a year, be- sides other large revenues, and the Duchess refused to accept a State allowance, to keep ladies-in- waiting, or maintain the cere- monial of what is officially called a "household." They spent their honeymoon quietly at the least pretentious of the Duke's housca the white ivy-covered Sheen Lodge, nea: Richmond Park; and later they divided their time he tween Duff House, the historic seat of the Earls of Fife, Mar Lodge, Aberdeenshire, and their residences in Portman Square, London, and Chichester Terrace, Brighton.

"Her Royal Shyness." Born in 1667, in an age when seclusion was every well-bred girl's normal fate, the Princess Royal spent the first 22 years of her life at Marlborough House and Sandringham, playing the organ, painting, seldom going out into society, dressing plainly, and enjoying none but, the simplest of recreations.
But it is not likely that she suffered any sense of deprivation. At no time did she show any sign of missing the small measure of gaiety permitted to some of her contemporaries, and she seemed quite content to make in- frequent appearances at garden partics and weddings with her father and mother-then Prince and Princess of Wales.
She was intensely reserved und retiring someone laughingly christened her "Her Royal Shy- She came and went as пess." unobtrusively as possible, a simple and (in the pleasant sense of the word) homely figure in blue sergo and a sailor hat.

befell her in quick succession at ALLEGED the end of 1911 and beginning of 1912. In November, 1911, sho was travelling in the Delhi when that vessel was wrecked near Tangier, and she was rescued by a young Scot from the water only after a grim struggle, during which she showed great courage and coolness; and in the following year her husband died in Egypt. That was during Lord Kitchener's term of office at Sirdar, and the Kaiser was among those who sent wreaths.
The Princess Royal leaves two children -Princess Arthur of Connaught, Duchess of Fife, who married the Duke of Connaught's heir in 1913, and has one son, and Lady Maud Carnegie, who mar- ried the Earl of Southesk's heir in 1923 and gave birth to a son in 1929.-Evening News.
