LIBERIAN SLAVERY.

DEVILISH TORTURES REVEALED BY OFFICIAL ENQUIRY.

London, Jan, 16. Not long

ago a good deal of incredulity greeted the publication of Lady Simon's book wherein sho claimed that slavery still existed on a large scale. She la now being Inundated by letters of appreciation following revelations of slavery In Liberia "the Country of the Free" when founded in 1822 as a homo for liberated American slaves. The revelations are contained in the re- port of the International Commis- alon sent by the Langue of Nations upon the Invitation of the Liberian Government itself following a charge made in the United States in 1929 that there was practicely an "or ganised slave trade" in supplying labour to Fernando Fo from Liberia, The Commission was formally con- Vocal Duet-

A neighbour, Mro. Davis, said that about five years ago her hus- band said that he had seen a woman sitting at the Vales' fraut window Mrs. Vale was away at the time. She chuffed Vale next day about having a woman visitor, and he re- plied: "It was myself dressed up 18 woman.” She asked him what his wife thought about it, and he replied: "She does not know any. thing about it. She has never been the things; don't mention it to

After a police witness had given evidence the Coroner suggested that while Vale was masquerading in women's clothing before mirrors to see how he looked. he accidentally hanged himself

The following are some glimpses of life In that unhappy country as

the report. The vil-: revealed in lages are deserted and the villagers destitute, terrified of worse treat- ment ahead and very reluctant to give evidence. As one Chief told the Commissioners: "You are off to- afraid the morrow Then we are lion will jump." Apparently the Government officials and the soldiers have established a reign of terror, and have kidnapped, flogged, bribed and tortured the people in the campaign to recruit labour for the roads or buildings of Fernando Po. Witnesses described the following tortures: "Putfing us up kitchen," namely roping the victim to a beam above a fire, smoking him alive; "putting on sticka," including the devilish invention of joining two short sticks with a string, placing them crosswine on the shin, then wetting the string and causing it to shrink, inflicting agony on the sufferer: "No 1 basket punishment," whereby a big round basket filled with earth and heavy stones, which, takes four soldiers to lit, la placed If he is ablo on the victim's head, to ratk, the victim is ordered to revolve with the basket, which is suddenly given an extra twist, or a soldier clutches the victim so that he is unable to turn with the basket, resulting usually in a fatal injury' to the neck--if the actually broken.
