Regarding the origin and deriva- tlon of the word Maru, commonly used with a name of a ship, there have been diverse views expressed by different authorities, and this subject has from time to time given. rise lo an animated discussion among students and laymen alike.

In the meantime a leading firm of shipowners. has for its own guid- ance arranged that Lloyd's Daily Index should be examined care- fully, and that notes should be taken of vessels of all nationalitics which are now obviously laid up unemploy-; ed in all ports of the world, and they have permitted the publication of the results.

The examination shows that the number of vessels so laid up, ex- cluding those owned by the United States Shipping Board and oll tanker, is 1,047, and the gross tonnage of these ships is 4,467,150. In addition, there are idle 75 vcs- sels, bf, 423,866 tons, belonging to the United States Shipping Board, au that, on the basis of the examing- tion, there are now idle through- out the world 1,122 cargo vessels, of 4,895,966 tona gross.
