SHIPPING INDUSTRY.

BRIGHTER OUTLOOK FOR THIS YEAR.

"The decade which ends on De- cember 31 has been one of the nöst remarkable, as well as the most trying, for the shipping in- dustry.. Even now there are few real signs of the clouds lifting. Hopes of 糖 revival must centred in a scaling down of costs, in a breaking down of inter- sational barriers, and in the ex- pansion of International action."

ba

Thus Sir Arthur Sutherland, president of the Chamber of Ship- ping, epitomises the position of the shipping industry in an article in the Shipbuilding and Engineer- ing number of the Glasgow Herald for 1930.

"I am pleased to know," he con- tinues, "that confidence still re- mains in those responsible for the, ronduct of the shipping industry. and feel certain that the tide will again tura, and that, even though the prospects' at the moment are ss uncertain, we can surely hops and look for better trade in 1931."

TYNESIDE TRADE.

SUGGESTED TRUST TO DEVELOP INDUSTRIES.

Convened by the Lord Mayor of Newcastle, CL meeting of the Mayors of Tyneside boroughs de- cided to seek

an interview with the Prime Minister and the First (Lord of the Admiralty with a view to urging the Government to ex- pedite the placing of orders for the 1931 programme, and so give much-needed shipbuilding work to the Tyne.

Was

- The discussion, which initiated by the Lord Mayor, rang, ed round the question of inducing new industries to the area, advan-

tages of air port, and the second Cunarder, and it was intimated by Mr. Martin Connolly, of the Boilermakers' Society, that while there was no prospect of the order for the second Cunarder being placed immediately, it would even- tually come to the Tyne.
