BOXING IN THE EAST colours of the Royal Air
END.
Amusing Afternoon's Entertainment.
"FOUR PENNY" ATMOSPHERE.
W
(By T. Wagstaff.) Premierland, the Mecca of the East End's boxing! fans, is to be converted into B motor garage. The general public may not be aware that Premierland was aristocrat of East End boxing the halls, to which ambitious youth literally fought its way, from a number of small and unpretentious rings which are scattered about that romantic part of London which lies "East of Aldgate Pump."
Force.
This morning he was down and out, and glad of this chance of earning four shillings.
Half Starved.
As he stepped into the ring his body showed the bloated skinziness of the "bread-and-only-bread" fed man, and although he fought with skill and courage his blows lacked force and he had no staying power. Soon he showed algns of punish ment, and in the second round went down with a crash, but was saved by the bell.
"Stop the flight!" shouted an un- when "Time" was called the ex-Air shaven pug in the fourpannies, but

One of the most popular of these is Luke Doran's Palace. Here found myself on a warm Sunday morning in company with some 200 of the locals, although the ball would have been more comfortably alled with 120.
Conditions.
The prices of admission varied from four-pence for a stand at the back of the hall to one and three- pence for an ex-cinema tip-up sent at the ring side. The atmosphere was stuffy and smoky to bagin with, and, as the attendants were kept busy with orders for apples, potato crisps and chewing gum be. tween the bouts, the general mel- lowness showed a tendency to in crease.
The M.C. had "personality" and several large assistants, Ro that, although the proceedings were sometimes uproarious, the dis- cipline of the ring was kept at an extremely high level.

The Programme.

The combined ticket-programme interesting and descriptive. For instance, there was the bout between the "Poplar lad who has Won All Along the Line" and the "Bethnal Green boy who baa K.Q,'d All the Best;"
four-round "Needle Fight to settle a dispute that had arisen between two lada in the course of their Daily Oc- cupation;" while international In- terest was aroused by a six-round contest between "The Scotch Ter- rier" and "The Stepney Terrier," a description that one feels is a little misleading in view of the fact that both boys came from Holly Bush-

One Fight. Here it has to be recorded that the Stepney Terrier showed a dis- position to take the count too easily in the second round, but thought better of it when a section of the audience began to chant in an affected treble, "Ringer, ringer rosig. All fall down." In the fourth round, however, he decided to stay down for good despite the Barcastic advice tendered to his second by a chesty individual with a broken nose to "Bite 'is earl 'e's still a-breavin","
