46 SHOCKING TIMES."

LORD WEMYSS ON THE OUTLOOK OF SHIPPING.

Lord Wemyss (chairman), pre- siding at the annual meeting of the London-American Maritime Trad- ing Co., Ltd., in mail weak, said shipping and other industries were passing through "shocking times," Shipping had never been down to Buch a low level. He expressed a sincere hope that things would soon improve, but it would be too sanguine to hope the change would arrive rapidly.

The net profits of their associ ates, the Thompson Steamshipping Co., Ltd., for the year amounted to £17,496 (a decrease of £13,849 as compared with the previous year's net prosts), and this, with the balance brought forward the total

up to £19,901. The dividend on the preference capital had been paid. and the directors recommended that a dividend of five per cent, free of tax be pald on the ordinary capi tal, and that £10,000 be written off the book value of the steamers, which left a balance of £3,001 to be

carried forward.

The London-American Maritime Trading Co., Ltd., received as its share of the dividend on the or dinary capital £4,841. That, with the £4,067 War Risk refund and the preference dividend shown in the London-American Maritime Trad ing Co., Ltd., profit and loss ac. count enabled the company to pay a dividend of 21 per cent. on the as the ordinary capital, as well dividend on the preference capital. The company's profits he sald, showed a considerable diminution, but compared very favourably with Bombay, Marseilles & London.
