PUZZLES
Puzzles are always a welcome feature at any Christmas gathering. Below may be found some ingenious puzzles familiar to some, perhaps, but unknown to others. All are simple when you know how to solve
them!
THE NINE BARRELS.
In how many different ways can you arrange the 9 barrels shown below in three tiers of three so that no barrel shall have a smaller number than its own below it or to the right of it? The simplest arrangement is 1, 2, 3 at the top. 4. 5. 6 immediately below, and 7, 8, 9 in the lowest row. An- other simple arrangement is sketched here:
