sight a fight for the title.
There were tumultuous scenes at Premierland, the Whitechapel box- ing resort, when John. Pettifer, the former dishwasher, called the English Camera, made his first professional appearance in the ring, writes Trevor Wignall.
His opponent was Jack Stratton, of London, who has been tutored, and was seconded by his uncle, Pat O'Keeffe, who for several years wae the middleweight champion of Great Britain.
After a fight that was packed With excitement Pettifer won in the ninth round with what is known as
technical knock-out.
When the bell ended the eighth round Stratton was taking a count. bat he appeared then to be so ex- hausted that it was not surprising that at the opening of the ninth round his seconds threw in the towel.
Amazing Reception. Throughout the contest the noise was deafening, but the re- ception accorded Pettifer when he was declared the victor was one of the most remarkable. I have ever witnessed.
The packed building simply rang with shouts, and dozens of hats were thrown into the air. It was just as though Pettifer had won the championship of the world, and I do not remember any novice re- ceiving a more terrific ovation.
The first round was sensational, Pettifer, who stands 6ft, fins., and weighed 17st. at least 40lbs. heavier than Stratton started with a rush, but after about two minutes he was clipped on the chin with a left hook, and collapsed in a heap.
He was up at the call of aaven, still shaking his befuddled head, but he showed that he has plenty of gameness by carrying the fight to his opponent,
Too Tall
It was noticed when he returned to hla corner that he was too tail to sit with comfort on the ordinary
stool, and a thick suitcase was placed on the stool so as to prevent his knees from touching his chin.
Pettifer was raw and much too wild in the second and third rounds, while in the fourth his left eye was cut. But there was considerabls promise in everything he did, and he roused the spectators to semi-
Cuthbert tipped the scale at 9 atone 4 . and Foroman at 9 stone b. Foreman's terrific punches floored Cuthbert three times but these were countered by the challengers fine generalship In a fight which was packed with thrills.--Reuter.

Born in 1838, he was educated at King's College School and King's College, London, and at Trinity Hall, Cambridge, where he took his B.A. He was called to the Bar at the Inner Temple in 1664, and prac. tised in Lancashire until 1886. when he was appointed a county- court judge. In 1005 he retired.
Judge Coventry attributed his length of years to his fondness for rowing. He learned to scull when he was 8 years old, and when he went up to Trinity Hall he soon made a reputation. He was No. & in the Cambridge boat in 1860 and 1861, and was the oldest veteran of the race.
"Rowing was real hard work in those days," he said shortly after he had celebrated his 90th birth- day. "We wore straw hat in the sixties. The chief difference be tween the races then and now is the, sliding seat. I myself never used a sliding seat. We ate Well and trained hard. We had chops for breakfast and joints and milk puddings for dinner. We drank a certain amount of beer and had one glass of port every night."
