MEASURES TO REDUCE BUILDING CAPACITY,
The total deadweight tonnage of Japanese tramp steamers of over. 2.000 deadweight tons was, accord- ing to the records of the Kobe Ship- ping Association, 3,189,632 tons in July, 1929, of which only 26,446 tons were lald up. Since that date, writes Mr. G. B. Sansom, C.M.G, Commercial Counsellor, to the British Embassy, Tokyo, in a report to the Department of Over- seas Trade on economic conditiona in Japan, dated June, 1980, the proportion of tramp tonnage laid up is shown by the following figures:
