VIOLINCELLO RECITALYEN GOING ABOARD
IN CITY HALL.
Brilliant Technique by Mddle. Adele Clement.
APPRECIATIVE AUDIENCE.
"
A small but distinguished aud!- cnce, which included the Consul for France, His Excellency M. Duval-Villalon, Mdme. Villalon, the Hon. Mr. W. E. L. Shenton and Mrs. Shonton, attended a violin 'cello reeltal by Mdle, Adele Clement (Premier Prix du Con- servatiore de Paris) In the City Hall last night.
The programme opened with an eighteenth century sonnte by Breval in three movements, which was played with restraint and feeling. A quintette of lighter pieces by Faure, Valensin, Tchere- pine, Gennaro, and Boulanger fol- lowed, which were played with ar almost flawless technique, except that the 'cellist's top notes were occasionally rather "scrapy," "Parmi les sentiers fleuris." (Gea- naro) which she played with the mute, proved to be a most attrac- tive number.

SHANSI PLUNGED INTO A
CRITICAL STATE.
"PROPER PROTECTION."
Shanghai, Monday.. According to General Chao Heou- yu, Pacification Commissioner of Shansi, the problem of the north- western stiuation will be settled im- mediately upon the departure of Yen Hai-shan and Feng Yu-bslang for foreign countries.
Yen is reported to have left his birth place Hoplehun on November 24, but his destination is unknown. However, one report asserts that Yon is leaving for Japan, via Tien- tsim, since General Chang Hsueh- lang has promised to give him the proper protection, when passing his territory.
"Going Abroad,"
Yen Hal-shan and Feng Yu- hsiang have wired General Chang Haueh-liang that they are going abroad within the next week and that General Chang is requested to be responsible for the rehabElta- tion of the north-westera pravinces after their departure.
At a meeting in Taiyuan, Yen's subordinate generals have reached the decision to urge Yen to leave China, thus saving Shansi from Five preludes by Abbiate, de-plunging into a critical state..... dicated to Mille.
