Intoxicated motor-car drivers : have killed 15,000 people in the United States and maimed or injur- ed from 300,000 to 500,000 others according to an estimats compiled | by Senater Dill (Demperat), of Washington.
"In seven years" says the state-
ment, "convicted drunken drivers
| killed 976 people and injured 14,000
others in Massachusetts.
In New York there were 47 deaths and 840 injuries, and ›in]
Detroit 15 deaths and 330 accidents. "It is possible only to conjecture the number of deaths and accidenta caused by drink and net oncially reported.
"Death rates from motor crashesi in 78 cities, representing 33,000,000 people increased 11 per cent. from 1928 to 1929 according to the Census Bureau."

The Senator's statement also quot Dr. W. V. Bingham, chair- mof the Committee on the
uses of Automobile Accidents as daying that it is highly probable that liquor is a factor in a much greater proportion of cases than is officially recognised.
"Intoxication at times is dfcult to prove in court.
"There is need of a more wide- spread and definite pubile know- ledge of the effect upon the driver and pedestrian of alcohol used in quantities far short of that which results in obvious intoxication, but which tend, nevertheless, to de- crease motor control and may ap preciably lessen the sense of ren- ponsibility.

EXCESS OF LUXURIES
FALL IN PRICES BLAMED FOR BAD TRADE.
London, Sept. 26. While housewives in Great Bri- tain are rejoicing that plentiful supplies have brought about a re- duction in price in almost all ar ticles of food this very fact was blamed for the present black out- look in trade by Mr. Henry Morgan in his presidential ad- dress at the annual conference of Incorporated Accountants at Shef- field,
The ingenuity of man, he said, appeared to have harnessed the forces of nature too rapidly for the world's political, economic and social development,

There was superfluity of necessities and luxuries and raw materials.
There was an enormous surplus of wheat, cotton, wool, rubber, tin, and copper, and the produc- tion far exceeded consumption.
As a result commerce was be set with appalling difficulties, es- pecially in Great Britain.

Similar pessimistic views were expressed by Sir Walter Ralni, President of the Association of British Chambers of Commerce atį Birmingham, who said that even if trade were at its very best it: was problematical if many of the unemployed would ever
be em ployed again.
He predicted that Great Britain might wake quite suddenly, to the
smoshing realisation

A WEEK'S PAPERS IN ONE.
Armistice Day was observed in the Colony with all due solemnity. The observation was on a rather elaborate scale than heretofore, and the resulting ceremony was one of the most impressive yet seen in Hong Kong, A full report appears in the current issue of the OVERLAND CHINA MAIL.
amusing.
A situation fraught with somewhat possibilities occurred in Kowloon during the week, when two "filles de joie" accosted members of the local Police Force. As a result, the offending girls were brought before the Magistrate, and duly fined. The OVERLAND CHINA MAIL contains a full report,
Another interesting report in the OVERLAND CHINA MAIL concerns an allegation brought by the Official Film Censor. It was stated that a film had been shown at a local cinema without the permission of the then acting censor. The Magistrate, dismissing the case, made sapient comment upon the methods of censoring.
As a result of an attack, said to be by terrorists, Mr. Lenox Simpson, erstwhile Commissioner of Customs under the short-lived Shans regiment, in Tientsia, succumbed: Mr. Simpson, well-known under his nom-de-plume of Putnam Weale, was a well-known figure in North China. The attack made upon him has been the subject of con- siderable controversy. The OVERLAND CHINĂ MAIL, con- tains all relevant despatches on the subject.
