TONNAGE PARITY.
U.S. PLEA FOR GREATER NATIONAL 'SUPPORT,
Less than 40 per cent. of the manufacturing products of the, is carried in United States American bottoms, the balance being carried in foreign flag ships, the Assistant Postmaster-Gen- eral, Mr. Glover, declares in u statement designed to stimulate Interest in the United States merchant marine. After recall- ing that a few years before the War only 8 per cent. of the coun-
United States ships, Mr. Glover try's tonnage was carried in asked if there must be parity in warships, why should there not the parity in mercharit ships?
"Naturally the foreign coun tries are not impressed with the tremendous strides that this
country is taking in the develop ment of its merchant marine." he said. "We would be hesitant to ship more than 50 per cent. of our domestic commerce on a foreign- jowned railroad (if the same were possible) running through this country from the north to the
south.'
Postmaster-: The Assistant General urged. 'U.S. ships for American products and the US. Bag on the high seas of the world. The prestige of the United States 18 a, merchant marine country must be restored where it was.in "the clipper ship days," he said..
This, he added, is being accom- plished through the benefits of the Jones-White Act, which was being administered by the Ship- Ping Board, and Post Office De Dartment.
