ANOTHER MYSTERY'
WARSHIP.
A Revolution in Cruiser. Construction.
NEW FRENCH VESSEL
Brest, Aug. 20: Naval shipyard workers here are to lay the keel of what will be the world's mystery warship of 1931, the new 10,000 tons cruiser Algerie..
Although sister
ship to the formidable fast Duquesne and Suffern
the and Dupleix, newest addition to France's be maritime
to power is revolution. in cruiser con- struction, the fruit of years of patient research by Ministry of the Navy designers and en- gineers,
So far as is permitted to be known at present, the new craft distinct will incorporate three changes in accepted cruiser de- funnels, she will have only one; sign. Instead of the usual two similarly there will be only one mast, properly, speaking, the! after mast being replaced by a slender arm to support the train- ing radio wires; while the bridge' will lie squat and flat on her fore gun turrets instead of scaling up the mast, thus giving a whale- like appearance to the steel mon- ster.
Solidity and Speed. Minister of the Navy J. L. Dumesnil is largely responsible for inspiring France's new mys tery warship. Satisfied that for the moment sufficient speed has been attained in the Algerie's sis- ter craft, each capable of slightly
more than 33 knots, M. Dumesnil turned his attention to criticisms from certain competent quarters that, while swift to the attack, the speed-boat type of cruiser like the Duquesne might not be so robust and redoubtable when en- gaged under fire, owing to the sacrifice of solidity for speed.

While anxious not to lose speed in the latest series, M. Damesnil directed his naval designers to endeavour to strengthen the armour-plating without slowing Tai down the huge steel fighter. Working to this end, the naval ex- perts have evolved the Algerie,. sweeping away a funnel, knocking off a mast and eliminating much upper-structure and adding the weight saved to solidify the huge body.
The Algerie in this way will be able to withstand the fire of the same calibre of guns as she her- self will carry in her forward The

Duquesne and the other sister craft carry the same size of guns, but it is doubted whether these' earlier ships could stand much under a battery of such guns.
Not Much Slower... Admittedly, it is expected that the Algerie will be somewhat slower after all, but it is not ex- pected that she will lose more

HONG KONG TIDE.
- The tide table given below has been obtained by ald of the Tide-predlet-
ponents for the better prediction of Machine, which includes 40 com- tkes, from the result of the analysis of the tidal observations, taken at the Kowloon tidal observatory under the direction of Dr. Dobeack during the years 1887, 1888 and 1889.
The times and heights are given for Kowloon; but they may be used for the Victoria Naval Yard and Aberdeen, the differences being very small
The times of high and low-water must not be considered to coincide with, the times of slack-water and change of current, the two phenomeza being quite distinct.,
