PARK INSTEAD OF WHARVES.
A Pleasure Ground by The Thames.
It was hot and dusty along the Jamaica Road, when petrol fumes from the incessant dockland traffic mingled with the smoke drifting from cargo steamers in the adjoining waterways.
But the way led through strange jumbled streets and over- swing bridges -- to creaking wharves where Rotherhithe is to
have its river-side Lido, costing
£45,000.
"Back of the Docks" is the des cription Rotherhithe gives to the district in which these wharves are to be demolished by the Ber- mondsey Council.
In their place will be an up-to- date Thames-side playground for young and old.
Part of the foreshore is to be reclaimed and a promenade of gleaming white stone will fringe the river.
Stretches of cool green grass, flower-gardens, tree-lined walks and sand-pits for the children are part of the scheme.
There are members of the Council who hint at the possibility of sun-bathing.
That may come in time.
