AN IMPORTANT CENTRE.
manner: the bark of the tree is first peeled off before incisions are made. The first, incision is cut at a helght| of about five or six inches above the ground. Then parallel cuts are made at intervals of about one foot i until the lowest branches are reach- ed. The cuts are made slantwise, and are about one foot long and over one-third of an inch deep. At the middle of each Incision, an open- ing is made with a long sharp knife. and, at each opening, bamboo tubes or oyster shells are placed to collect the sap which exudes from the wounds. The removal of the sap from the receptacles is usually done in the evening, for the sap, when ex- posed to air, will rapidly change its colour from pure white into dark brown. The exudation from each wound is allowed to continue for about five days before the cutting of: new incisions, which are usually made at a spot a little above the old marks, and in this way the whole trunk is tapped. After a tapping. the tree is allowed a period of from five to seven years to recover. The amount of sap yielded by cach tree depends upon the condition of the tree, the kind of soil in which it grows and the time and manner of tapping. Generally, the output from each large tree by a season'a tapping averages about two cattles.
