She touches swimming in Boardwalk pool, a bronzed young woman with a determined grin.

Unless you raise your voice she cannot hear you and looks at you with an expression that has in it embarrassment, bewilder

ment, and fear.

Across the back of her bathing suit is. lottered:

"Ederle." Four years ago this August Gertrude Ederle swam the Eng tech Channel

and came, home to receive a broadway welcome, con- gratulatory messages from Prest dont Coolidge and Governor Smith, and vaudeville offers that were sald at the time to amount to nearly $1,000,000,

To-day she pushes her hair back behind her ears a gesture that has become characteristic since

she began to lose her hearing two years ago as the result of those 14 hours in the English Channel

and said, a little wistfully: "It wasn't worthwhile.

"I'm not sorry I did it. "Only if I'd known how it was going to Le, that I'd lose my hearing-1 don't think I'd have done it. It -it wasn't worth it."

Four years ago Gertrude Ederle ode up the bay on the Macorn and up Broadway in an open car white crowds cheered and ticker- Alled the tape and paper snow Air.

"Sometimes I kind of wonder if all that really happened to me," she said slowly.

"But sometimes at dances the orchestra plays 'Let Me Call You Sweetheart, the song I kept bum ming while I was in the channel

the song the bands played when I came home.

"And then it all sort of comes back over me again, and I have

kee me cry."

A year ago last fall, at the end 0: two years in vaudeville. Gertrude's hearing began to fail. Last winter she could not hear at all. It is better now, but already her voice has begun to take on the flat quality that the voices of the dest have.

THE CHINA MAIL.'

"The doctors say it was the swim that did it," she said, "plus those terribly strenuous when I was in the water too much and never had any chance to rest."

JOHN PETTIFER.

AN ENGLISH CARNERA DISCOVERY.

1-

I went to Brighton for a touch of the sun and also to get a glow from the genial countenance of Mr. Harry Preston, writes Trevor C. Wignall, in the Daily Express, Among those I met in his Royal Albion Hotel was Mr. George Me- Donald, whose father seconded Tom Sayers against John Camel Heenan on a famous morning at Farnborough, and who himself has been.connected with boxing for over forty years. He told me, to my great interest, that he had found an English Carners, and the result was that I visited the most private gymnasium in the world for the sole purpose of Inspecting this youth, who by some people is already regarded as a potential goldmine.

Fine Proportions. The name of the newcomer to pugilism is John Pettifer, whose stock is entirely English. He was born at St. Pancras, London, twenty-one years ago, stands 6ft. Gins. weighs 17st. Alba., and has a reach of 82 inches. Two months ago he was a washer of dishes in the Regent Palace Hotel, and the only public boxing he has yet done was in the early part of this year, when he appeared in a tournament promoted by the Lyons Boxing Club, of which he was a member, and knocked out one opponent, and won on points over another. Not more than a dozen persons have geen him in training, and although I am not going to be foolish enough to say after a glance or two, that he is certain to become a champion, I am ready to declare that this male Nippy is a much

more promising pugilist than was Primo Carners when I first watch

Tientsin, August 19. At about 10,45 yesterday morning a No. 1 ganger named Tung of the Douglas 23 Peking-Liaoning Railway reported H. K. Steamboat ... to the Station Master at Peltsang Indo-China (Pref.) ... that there was a bomb hanging

sent from both stations to see if it could be moved and at the same time Mr. Hsu, of the Engineering Department, went to the spot front the Head Office by trolley. The bomb was removed by the policemen and the Engineering Department at 1.15 and traffe over this section of the line was resumed.

We understand that the bomb was actually screwed to the bridge, and that one or two trains probably passed over it before it was noticed. No. 8 down train arrived at the

Peltsang Station at 11.04 and left at 12,85. It was delayed about one and a half hours by this incident.

Greatest Adventure.

He is no greyhound for speed yet, but he is light on his feet, and I think ho will be really fast when he is more experienced. He is beautifully built for boxing, his muscles being small and sleek, and there is no part of Kim that bulges. What I failed to ascertain was whether he has the necessary temperament and fighting spirit, but that will not be known until he is properly tested. Since I first turned my attention, to fighting. I have witnessed the arrival and the departure of many youths who ap peared to have everything, but Pettifer is so near to my concep tion of what a heavy-weight new comer should be that I shall follow him very closely Indeed when he steps out on the greatest adventure of his life.
