COUNTY CRICKET OPERATION: TO TEST]

RESULTS.

Surprise Defeat of Yorkshire.

PLUCKY SOMERSET."

London, Yesterday. The surprise of the week-end programme of first-class, county matches was the defeat of York-

shire at Sheffield by Surrey. The visitors batted first and scored 438-9, at which point the closure was applied and then they proceed- ed to dismiss Yorkshire twice, and had 22 runs in hand at the finish. This match had licen set aside as Robinson's benefit game.

Lancashire consolidated their position, by defeating Warwickshire at Birmingham, whilst Kont, an- other strong challenger for the honours, went down before Sussex ut Folkestone. At Bath, Sémerset pluckily replied to Northant's huge'

total of 457-8 by scoring 339 in the only drawn game in the county championship.

The Australians had to be con- tent with a draw at Tront Bridge, finishing up with a lead of 223 with six wickets in hand. Kippax and McCabe were again prominent in the batting line, and Hurwood came out with the fine figures of 5-111 out of a total of 433..

Below are appended the most noteworthy feats accomplished in the programme of matches just
