ing with its botanical nature he explained that it had the property of storing in its stem a concentrat- ed solution of sucrose in liquid form which acted as a form of food reserve to ensure growth when the eyes begin to sprout and to form new plants.
Planting Methods.. The various planting methods adopted in different countries to suit local conditions showed that the agriculture of the cane had been worked out very thoroughly, la fact, for no other tropical crop had the manurial requirements been so definitely ascertained. As the result of extensive work on the breeding and selection of new varieties the yield of cane
had been steadily increased, in Java to the extent of 25 per cent. over the whole area
laid down in sugar cultivation.
An average yield, of six tons of sugar is now being obtained in Java, while yields of nine tons had been obtained from selected estates in Hawaii. For sugar beet the yield was only two tons of sugar per acre.
In the development of the sugar refining the chemist had played a most important part and without his collaboration at all stages the modern sugar factory would have been impossible. The processes in volved in the manufacture of sugar and the various types of machinery used were then described by the lecturer who emphasised that care ful chemical control was exercised. at all stages.
