It is somewhat unfortunate for me, as your new president, that we should meet at our annual gather- ing this year at a time when ship- ping is under such a cloud. Dur ing my. 34 years of experience of the shipping trade I have never known a depression of such in- tensity and such widespread scope as the one under which we are now suffering. I am told by ship- owners of much longer experience. than my own that the only time when they remember a situation comparable to the present one was in the years 1882-1883. It appears to be far more than a coincidence that that earlier depression occur red about 12 years after the Franco-Prussian War, while the present one has taken place nearly 12 years after the Great War.
