That the income obtained by German steamship companies through their activities abroad is one of the few productive Items which the country makes use of in order to make necessary im- provements in its balance sheet is pointed out In a. review of the progress of German shipping in 1929 by Mn C. Ketten, the shipping econd- mist, of Bremen. There is hardly another branch of industry con- tributing more to the credit side' of the national finance than the German merchant marine.
This fact, he continues, explains why so much stress was placed upon the rebuilding of the mer- chant fleet as part of the pro- gramme of economic reconstruc- tion, Financial aid advanced by the State as Indemnification to the companies for losses inflicted upon them, he asserts, has been capital wisely invested.
"Frequently," he continued, "the question is raised as to how it has
been made possible, in the face of
absolutely inadequate financial re- sources, which were further re- duced by inflation, to rebuild the German commercial fleet, and whe-1 ther its rapid growth is justifiable in view of the fuct that the com mercial tonnage of the world to- day comprises 68,000,000 tons, 'ác- cording to Lloyd's Register, as compared with 49,000,000 tons be fore the War and which appears by far too large for the actual needs of world trade.
