Italians are still wondering why Toscanini resigned his post at the Scala, which he had held for eight years. In vain have en. terprising journalists tried to ex- tract from him, the motives for his desertion. The "Italia Let- teraria" hints at a possible ex- planation:-

Prussia gives no money, but is willing to place the whole appara- tus of her opera houses at the dis- posal of the new venture-singers and orchestra included. Prelimin ary announcements are imposing. The general manager of the State Opera, Herr Tietjen, is On the board of directors. His name self. alone is sufficient guarantee for the quality of the opera produced. Reinhardt's Faith,

What Prussia actually hopes to do is to cease subsidising provin- cial opera houses, and to send the talkie-opera into the farthest corners of the country. Every first-class rendering of a famous work will have its flm version. Ordinary moving-picture houses will, it is understood at present, not be permitted to present these sound films at all. They will be put on either in the original muni- cipal or State theatres, once used for court performances, and pre- sented in every way with the dig nity due to the original conception

of opera.

Since the business side of the undertaking цев the Blogan "European Films for Europeans" In the preliminary announcements, it is of particular interest to nota that every language save English is to be employed for opera. Here there is no competition, with America Intended. On the other hand, the Reinhardt Alms-apart from a proposed, version of the "Federmaus"-will be produced in Gorman, English, and French ver- sions. Italian Audience's

Objection.

Rome, May 16. The audience at the Scala

Theatre of Milan refused to listen to a symphony by Honegger which illustrates the progress of a Rugby When You Feel Like This

Herr Honegger is associated with Herr Hindemith as one of the leaders of the most advanced school of German music.

Curiously enough, Hindemith's "News of the Day," an overture of very similar construction, WAR warmly applauded by the audience a few minutes before.
