SHIPS THAT CREAK IN
THE NIGHT.
BATTLESHIPS SAID TO BE JUST AS BAD.
NERVY PASSENGERS.
An important matter for ali ocean travellers was the question of "creakage," said Dr. P. A, Hillhouse, of Glasgow, at the In- stitute of Naval Architects in London recently.
He had recently done four voyages-two on the Pacific and two on the Atlantic. Of the four ships on which he was a passen. ger, three pitched from beginning to end of the voyage, and one of them rolled, but all of them were unanimous in creaking.
They could imagine how very distressing this must be to a nervous passenger, or say to an American millionaire, who, hav- ing paid £200 or £300 for the voy- age, had to listen night after night to the creaking.
When Dr. Hillhouse asked: "Can any naval man tell me whe- ther or not there is creaking in battleships, in which there is not much timber?” Admiral of the Fleet, Lord Waster Wemyss, the president, replied, with an em- phatic "Yes."
NEW MOTOR LINER.
