Recent Developments in Photography.

The recent publication of a photograph taken in what should call total darkness marks the conclusion of the first stage in a course of experiments extend- ing over many years. The details of this research are not light read- ing, but some of the salient points are of general interest, and Can easily be comprehended.

Most of us know that there are invisible as well as visible ruys, and from time to time those at the red end of the spectrum the {"infra-red" ones are talked about as if they were an entirely new discovery. As a matter of fact the photographing of these rays has been attempted off and on, and with some success, for many years, the late Sir William Abney having penetrated into the infra-red re- gion for a considerable distance about half a century ago. It was marvellous that he should have got as far as he did with the materiais at his disposal, and for a long time no appreciable advance upon his. results was recorded.
