CONFIDENCE AND THE SWING OF THE CLUBHEAD.
The Left Hand.
"Why Is it that a couple of real good shots at the first few holes will make a golfer's form for the whole day?" asked a player recently..
That is why I insist that steady practice with the mashie is the road to advancement at golf.
Timing.
A player who is handling mashie correctly for shots at thirty or forty yards range can feel the head of his club come through. It is a short, and rather slow, awing, and he feels the clean cut of the Ho
"Confidence," was the answer, "Yes, I know that. I have heard it a hundred times. But why should confidence make the difference? Why aren't those shots we think hardest about the best? Why should the really good ones be those that į club-head through the turf. seem to have been hit almost care quickly acquires the kanck of timing lessly?"
the snap
of the wrists, and that timing serves him in good stead when he comes to lengthen the swing in using other clubs.
The answer can be summed up in one word-club-head.
Experience of every fault in golf, and the curing of it, will prove that failure to get the club-head through before the body comes round is far and away the most "usual root of evil.
Don't Lose Confidence,
When a player is thinking can- fidently, and 'swinging easily, the club-head contes through. Once he loses enfidence, and begins to won der wat is wrong with his awing. he stiffens up. The characteristic sns of the wrists is lost, the club- head fails to come through easily, and both length and control are lost,
It is the same with mashic shots. Getting the club-head through be- fore the body moves is the whole. secret of necurate pilches to the pin. And it is with this shot that the golfer is most tempted to stiffen.
Patting, too, is a swinging of the club-head — not a push with the handa.
The secret of getting the club- head through is the downward pull of the left hand that starts the downward swing.
The Good Shot.
If the downward swing is begun with the right hand, there is always a movement of the body an active hit, as in a cricket stroke. This seriously prejudices the chances by getting the club-head through with a snap, and tends to "thump" it instead on the ground behind the bali. It is the swinging of the club.
head on to the ball, followed by a snap of the wrists at Impact, that makes the good shot.
A putt is not exactly the same. That is a right-handed stroke. Every other shot in golf is a left-handed stroke, at the beginning, at least.
¦
i
Keep a "Straight Left." Tenseness of the muscles of the shoulders prevents the club-head from getting through with a snap. There is too much conscious hit about the swing. This is not always a great disadvantage with an iron shot from a bad lie, but with, wooden clubs It is nearly always fatal.
The beginning of the downward swing with a pull of the left hand is one of the easiest of habits to ac- quire and one of the most certain ways to ensure a clean hit.
the ball should travel straight.
If the left arm is kept straight,
There must, however, be a bend, of the wrists at the top of the swing, otherwise you will not get the leverage with the left hand to begin the swing.

MORE DOCTORS.
Two Ladies to Practise Here.
The current issue of the Govern- ment Gazette contains the names of four additional persons who have been entitled to practise med!- cine in the Colony. They are:-
Lam Chi-wie, M.B., B.S.; Peter Fau Tak-kien, M.B., B.S.; Miss Lily Pau Choi-chue, M.B., B.S.; Miss Parrin Ruttonjee, M.B., B.S.
They are all graduates of the Hong Kong University, Miss Ruttonjee in the daughter of Mr. H. Ruttonjee, a well known meni- ber of the Parsee community. She Is the first Indian lady doctor to practise here.
There is one point about practice that I must emphasise. That is the danger of listening to every "tip" that is given to you.
The fundamental object of prac tice is to make a mechanical habit of certain actions, so that you do not have to think of them.
Confidence, as well as greater nc- euracy, can be secured by practice.

Practice should be devoted to ar quiring swing and timing. If you find you have a definite. fault in wire your game, it la usually useless to On demand attempt to treat that fault alone. The swing is simple enough, but to single out one point in it for atten- tion usually results in introducing a second fault to remedy the first. The best way to eliminate a fault is to go back to the beginning, and study the swing as though you had never learned it before.
