Kinney, who was born in Yar- mouth, Nova Scotia, in 1866, the son of the late Mr. Joseph R. Kinney, at one time a member of the local legislature, and later re- presenting Yarmouth in the Nova Scotia House of Commons, and leaving school at the age of six- teen, Captain Kinney commenced his sea career in the Walter D. Wallet (Captain Norman Hatfield), in which he made a voyage from Saint John, N.B., to
