A case of considerable interest to the community in general, and engineers in particular, commenced in the Supreme Court, when Messrs. Andersen, Meyer and Co., sued the Hong Kong and Shanghai Hotels, Limited, for a sum of over $25,000, bi connection with machinery installed in the company's hotels. The case for the plaintiffs, as outlined by Counsel, is reported in the OVERLAND CHINA MAIL.
"Ill-considered competition" in the marine insur- ance field was deplored by the Chairman of the Union Insurance Society of Canton at the annual meeting of the company. There had also been a good deal of “haphazard' underwriting," he added. stating that he hoped that leading underwriters would eventually come together to A full account arrange a satisfactory basis of rates. appears in the OVERLAND CHINA MAIL.
Local Honours on the occasion of the King's Birthday are fully dealt with in the OVERLAND CHINA MAIL, which also contains a graphic description of the celebration ceremonies in the Colony.
A further sensational drop in the dollar is reported in the OVERLAND CHINA MAIL. The present level is the lowest on record, and it is considered that it may fall even lower.
The Chairman of the Douglas Steamship Company, at the annual miceting of the Company, made sympathetic reference to the piratical attack on the ss. Haiching last December. He added an expression of appreciation of the work of the Royal Navy in connection with the tragedy, particularly H.M.S. Sterling and Sirdar.
The OVERLAND CHINA MAIL also contains a report of the opening of the Hong Kong Flying Club by His Excellency the Governor, who paid eloquent tribute to the work of aviation in the cause of humanity. He instanced the evacuation of women and children from Kabul during the troubles in Afghanistan some time ago.
Up-to-the-moment sports news continues to be a feature of the OVERLAND CHINA MAIL.
