From such figures as are given by him and others, it appears that, by 1819, about 100 steam vessels had been constructed in the United States, while, in 1820, the British Em- pire possessed 43 vessels, of the total tonnage of 7,240 tons. Twenty years later, the tonnage belonging to the United Kingdom was 96,807 tons, while that of the THROUGH BILLS OF LADING ISSUED brings into evidence the success-

Our geographical position, no less than the reeds of our far-flung Empire and our great overseas trade, naturally led to the build- ing of vessels fit for work in the open sea, and it is with the de velopment of such ships that we are mainly concerned. Though steam navigation 'became of in- creasing importance, for many years steam tonnage was small in comparison with sailing tonnage, and long after the advent of the steam ship, our sailing tonnage continued to increase. The rela- tive and approximate figures in 1840 were: steam vessels, 95,000 tons and sailing vessels, 3,000,000 ous godowns of Hong Kong and Kow tons; in 1849, steam vessels, loon Wharf and Godown Co, Ltd. 170,000 tons and sailing vessels, whence delivery, may be obtained.
