Behind the Scenes in Hollywood"

TWO COMEDIANS.

[By Dorothy Herzog.] Three years ago, a silm blue eye blond divided his time 'twixt the Hal Roach scenario

department and the grease paint.

A more generously proportioned brunette was in regular stock. The two were minor characters, occasional ly, in the same picture.

Those were the days when Roach lined up names like Theda Bura, Lols Wilson, Priscilla Dean, et cetera. Pald them $10,000 to make a two reelor and surrounded them with stock actors.

Came A morn when another comedian was needed. A rush call. Enter the slim, blue-eyed chap to team with the more generously proportioned brunette. The picture was finished, It was shown in the projection room. Roach spotted the two comedians. He put them together in a picture of their own. They've recently been "discovered" by the ultras and to-day rank · prime flick favourites.

Introducing, please, Stan Laurel and Oliver ("Babe") Hardy.

They're a couple of swell guys, Stan and Babe. They don't take their art for publication. They're startled by their success. They work hard but they have a lotta laughs.

My introduction to them was a lulu. We were chewing the rag peacefully when suddenly a little. serious faced fellow behind horn rimmed glasses plucked Mr. Hardy's sleeve.

"May I see you a minute, Mr. Hardy?" timidly.

Mr. Hardy frowned. "I'm busy," and turned his back.

"But Mr. Hardy," persistently.

"I tell you I'm busy!" roared the furious Mr. Hardy. "Now get out!"

Wham! and Mr. Hardy's broad palm caught the little fellow on the chin. Clunk! Mr. Laurol'a foot kicked with deadly surenese and caught the same spot. The little fellow staggered backwards,

By this time, my eyes had popped to the floor. Suddenly Mr. Hardy doubled up and shouted and Mr. Laurel grinned delightedly.

"We practised that one for you," gurgled, Mr. Hardy.

Whereupon I picked up my eyes and came to....

The little, serious faced fellow behind the horn rimmed glasses-is

named Pete. He's an ex-acrobat who quit the game when he in- jured his leg in a fall. He works for the Laurel-Hardy troupe, and when he gets walloped on the chin he doesn't get walloped atall Seems his hand catches the blow. A dumb cluck like yours of to- day's date wouldn't be knowing that, however, without careful and laborious explanation,

Stan and Babe are at present completing two-reeler yclept "Blato." Both claim they play the Jimmy Parrott is title role. directing. This department apolo gizes to Jimmy for spelling his name correctly. It will not hap- pen again.

"THIEF OF BAGDAD".

News of an exciting production nature meanders to the stately I am told portals of this bureau. that Douglas Fairbanks is not only considering remarking "The Thief of Bagdad" as a music offering but has engaged a prominent composer write the score Immediately,

who journeyed with Doug aboard the magic carpet. Both artistical ly and Anancially, the offering was

a success.

In this talky era, 'tis quite the】

call accepted thing to

and excavate manuscripts that earned their

keep in the silencers. Whether Fairbanks can sing or not is a matter of small importance. He'll get by in a cañary capacity, Assiduous application to vocalizing and the generosity of the "mike" would do the trick.

LA ARGENTINA.

The evening La Argentina, famous Spanish dancer, gave her final terpsichore programme in L. A. the flickites turned out in large quantities. Greta Garbo was the innocent cause of sundry necks running the risk of becoming crooked for life. Greta wore, a mink coat, a plain fitting black toque, and a simple frock. Sh came to applaud La Argentina and not to vie with her. The Garbo's utter oblivion to stares was de- lightful. Also in the audience were Dolores Del Rio and Larry Kent, the Don Alvaradez, Lilyan Tashman and Eddie Lowe, Norma Shearer and Irving Thaiberg and the Ernst Lubitsch's.

Constance Bennet Plant and Philip Plant, millionaire, are pictured together, though they have separated. The screen star denied reports that she was seeking a reconciliation with her former husband.

FOR BUDDY?

"Tis said-said, mind you—that Famous Players intends remaking three of its early, silent hits. To wit: "Monaicur Beaucaire," "Peter Ibbetson," and "The Affairs of Anatole."
