LAWN BOWLS IN NEW

SEASON.

PROSPECTS FOR THE OPENING MATCHES

LISTS OF PLAYERS.

The Civil Service C.C. have as guests the Talkan Recreation Club the latter winning last year by 66 to 50. I have seen both Clubs in action in friendles this sea-

on, and I am not prepared to spot the winner to-morrow, Whichever aide wins will have to go the whole way.

Second Division.

A bad practice has grown up 1By "Short Head."}

of calling this the "Junior" divi Lawn bowlers in this, Colony, sion when it is really nothing of are fortunate in having a very the kind as it requires a mingling limited close season, thanks to the of experienced players to act as suitability of the, climate, In-uides and counsellors to

the premier bowling Club

the Kowloon Bowling Green Club -usually close down one day and open a new season on the follow- ing day, thus giving their mem- bera the "most-favoured-Club" treatraent by being able to play all the year round. This of course, is not always an advan

great an tage certainly not so advantage as some would make out. Some players may be seen on the green practically every night, and by the time the League season opens they have a tendency to staleness which is not con- ducive to good team work.

League or Friendly?

It is u moot point whether League games are the most enjoy able form of lawn bowls. It is submitted, and not sometimes without reason, that a competition of this nature makes for over- a procession up seriousness and and down the green of "funereal dials" as if the destiny of a sheep station were at stake Con every head. In informal matches, on the other hand, with not even silver spoons in the ofling, the true sporting instincts and tho free and easy tacties of the play- ers can be drawn out much more fully. The best can be seen of

lo have a Lengue. and as the matches therein are scheduled to bogia to-morrow, let us all make the most of it and, in the spirit of a famous Scottish "soccer" player, "play till we drap" in the cause of our own particular Club.

Police Hopes..

Thanks to the sporting spirit of the winners of the Second Divi- sion last season-Taikoo Rearen- tion Club-in not seeking promo- tion and two teams in the First

Police Division-the

Recreation Club, last year's wooden spoon- ists, will again be seen in the senior section this season. As happened to the Civil Service Cricket Club a couple or three seasons ago, the Police last year could do everything but win. Certainly their standard of bowls was no whit below that of Home of their conquerors by very nar- They have been row margins. out early at practice this season, and although it is Inevitable, owing to Home leave and other reasons, that there should be changes in the personnel of their rinks, they ought to make a res- pectable showing if they have exorcised their bad "joss."

They have as their opponents to-morrow the Club de Recreio at Happy Valley and, without really wishing the sporting Portuguese any harm, a win for the defend- ers of the peace would be wel- comed by all lawn bowlers. Last year the Police lost this match by 71 shots to. 44.

THE CHINA MAIL.

The Craigongower C.G. have as vialtors the K.C.C. and ought to repeat their last season's triumph by 78-48.

The Club do Recfelo are hosts to the Civil Service C.C. The lat-

ter "will have to shape better than

year ago when they just pulled the match out of the fire by the narrow margin of 65-51.

The K.B.G.C. have the choice of Hong Kong ground against the Electric Company, whom they beat a year ago by the big score

Since then the Elec tric" have come on, and they will endeavour to turn the tables to- newer but not necessarily young-morrow-unless they get "fused"

by our friend "Aṭtaboy."
