A Chinese man was at the Kow! Joon Magistracy this morning charged Lefore Mr. Whyte-Smith with assaulting a woman in the Asia Boarding House, Ynumati, with a chopper. Defendant frankly ad- mitted the charge.

COAL MINES' BILL

Lord Sankey, the Lord Chancel lor, moved in the House of Lords the second reading of the Coal Mines' Bill which, as He informed their Lordships, proposed firstly to regulate production and the sale of coal; secondly, to facilitate the re-organisation of the industry; thirdly to reduce working hours and: faurthly, to establish a Na- tional Board for the Industry.
Mr. Justice Sankey, who was Chairman of the Commission which reported on the coal situation of 1926, said that he was persuaded that the bill was a step in the right direction and would do something to dispel the cloud banging over before Mr. the great industry and remove the R.
