At the club recently members, were asking whether the scratch rolfer gets as much fun out of his game as the long-handicap man.
Myself, I was inclined to think that the long-handicap player had far the best of it. A small incident the other day changed my views, The most cheerful man I met in a whole week was a plus-three golfer. He should have little to learn of the thrills of golf, but the day I met him he had recorded the most exhilarat ing shot of his career.
He had driven the first hole and aunk the ball in one over a course new to him--a course known for its difficulties.
The distance was not unduly great --278 yards--but it is a fine shot to-reach the green at any time, when, with nothing favouring the drive, my plus-three friend had found the tin with his tee shot, ha considered that he had achieved a feat worth thinking about in future movements of depression.
The Joy of Golf.
To hole a ball in one calls for a combination of luck and ability-- and that is the joy of golf.
Mastering difficulties, and putting up a good score by will-power and good play, is satisfaction enough, but-and I record the truth with regret there is no joy like the joy of a round where sheer chance has come to the rescue once or twice at vital times.
luck. If there is any trouble about. the bad player finds it.
When you analyse the methods of players who, at any game, are re- 10.24 puted to be lucky, you will usually find that there is a large element of 10.28 commonsenso in their ways. The strokes that seem lucky are, if not actually premeditated, then based on previous experience of similar coups.

The most joyous rounds of golf are those in which the player brings off most of the ahots be aims for. and has thrown in a couple of 10.48 unexpected gifts.
..
If my theory that luck comes to 10.52 the good player is true, then the 10.56 good player should have the best chance of tasting the real joy of 11.00 gölf.
The long-handicap man, however, has every opportunity to know the fascination of the game-one can be fascinated by having a bad shot to play, without being overjoyed about! it. The joy of the short-handicap Few golfers can battle on with man is in reproducing his best form; real enthusiasm when nothing goes the long-handicap man has or right. They may not go to pieces, f 'should have-the delight of im- but they do not hit their shots with the verve that they do on the day when they feel that they have a friendly star guiding the ball.
The feeling that the luck is with you can change the course of a round.
L
Into The Tin.
I once saw a man four down at the turn. He halved a couple of holes with an effort, then had the mis- fortune to drop his ball at a short hole into a bunker, well down be- neath a mound guarding the edge of the green. His opponent played a safe shot, leaving himself with a vertain three. The other, resigned to the loss of the round, clouted the sand behind the ball with a niblick. The ball
rose high in the air. bounced on a slope a yard or twe from the bole, dropped, and rolled
down into the tin.
After that, he did not lose a hole, and his adversary could not do better than a string of fivea.
This influence of a player's luck
on his adversary is noticeable.
Poor Shots and Good Luck It is usual enough to see players who ought to know better lose three or four holes by bad play brought on at the sight of poor shots by their adversaries saved from dis- aster by good luck, say an iron shot scuttled along the ground, running up between bunkers, striking a hummock, and falling back on to the green when, on its merits, it should not be within yards of it.
I have a theory, though, that good luck comes to the good player.
And I am completely certain that the bad player gets most of the bad

It is usually found that the cause of failure to get distance is "falling back"-not coming through on to the left foot at the end of the swing.
