'NEW CHAIRMAN'S STATEMENT OF POLICY.
MODERNISING WORKS. '
"I have
tried to show some- thing of that side of the picture from which encouragement comes; we hear enough from the other side; ramour and gossip have been busy with our name and with our future. We will look after our future and we will de tend our name." So remarked
Mr. H. A. Reincke, the recently- appointed chairman of William Beardmore and Co., Ltd., whe at- tended his first function at Dal- muir Shipyard, Glasgow, the ceca- sion being the launch of the twin- serew motor-yacht Virginia, builtej to the order of Major Courtauld. Presiding at the luncheon
which followed, Mr. Reincke, ngo- posing success to the new yacht, expressed regret at the sudden illness of Mr. Black, which had pre- vented him from being present. In taking up his position in this company, Mr. Reincke continued, nothing inspired him with greater confidence then the fact that amongst his new colleagues he would find, men of the calibre of his old friend Mr. Bluck, it made him feel certain that he would find, as he had found, a spirit of cordial co-opera- tion, a spirit without which it was useless to try to cope with the pro- blems of industry, which weighed so heavily upon all sections of the com munity to-day.
Company's Duty.
After recalling the time of his first sojourn in Glasgow, over twenty-five, years ago, when he at tended the engineering and naval architecture classes at the Univer sity. he remarked that in every big public company there was a duty to wards the shareholders, and there was a duty towards the people it employed; efficiency of management presupposed efficiency of plant and of equipment, and there never was a' time when there was a greater neces- sity for concentrating every `effort ' n raising the efficiency of the incans of production in order to secure the widest and most promising oppor tunities of giving employment to the workingman. Recognising these incts, those, who recently shouldered the responsibility of shaping the destinies of the cam- pany had approved of the pro- gramme of the board for the modernisation of the Parkhead works.
Diesel Developments. Mr. Reincke went on to refer to the growing interest which the rail- ways were taking in the diesel elec. tric locomotive, in which class of
